Iceland is one of the most scenic destinations on earth. With dramatic landscapes and immense glaciers to calming hot springs and mesmerizing lava fields, Iceland happens to be the perfect honeymoon choice for adventurous couples.

With a welcoming population, relaxing spas and countless ways to create an epic adventure every day, Iceland has everything to make your honeymoon unforgettable. Here we share our top-five activities in Iceland to help you create memories to last a lifetime.

Relax in the blue lagoon spa in Iceland

1. Relax in the Blue Lagoon Spa

The Blue Lagoon is a geothermal spa famous for its warm, light blue waters ranging from 98° to 104°F. Every year, thousands of people venture to the Blue Lagoon to bathe in its tranquil waters, making it Iceland’s top attraction for good reason.

The waters are relaxing and serene, and offer plenty of space to cuddle up with your partner. For couples interested in toasting with a glass of champagne while soaking in the thermal waters, the Blue Lagoon has a swim-up bar similar to what you’d find at a tropical resort. It’s close proximity to Keflavík International Airport makes the Blue Lagoon Spa a convenient stop at the beginning or end of your honeymoon.

Cozy up under the Northern Lights in Iceland

2. Cozy up under the Northern Lights

We cannot plan your honeymoon without giving you the chance to see the northern lights (aurora borealis). Imagine a spectacular natural light show of the brightest shades of green and vibrant hues of blue, pink and violet – the experience is surreal for anyone lucky enough to see it in person. This phenomenon occurs when electrically charged particles from the sun enter the earth’s atmosphere and collide with gas particles, such as oxygen and nitrogen. As an added bonus, Iceland has many local tours that allow you to continue to join their group for free until you see the lights for yourself!

To increase your chances of seeing this incredible natural phenomenon, book your Iceland honeymoon between the months of October and March, as the lights are visible only to the naked eye during the winter months. In the summer, you will enjoy longer days and the midnight sun, which illuminates the sky for almost 24 hours a day.

Ice Caves for adventurous newlyweds

3. Ice Caves for adventurous newlyweds

Ice caving is one of Iceland’s most popular winter activities, and it provides dare-devil couples the opportunity to step foot between wall-to-wall ice while admiring the surrounding brilliant aqua and green colors. Ice caves have been stunning visitors for years, with each one offering its own unique ice formations.

Most of Iceland’s ice caves are naturally occurring, with the exception of one handmade cave, the Langjökull Ice Cave, which is open all year long – just in case you decide to honeymoon in the summer. A great number of ice caves can also be found in Vatnajökull National Park, but our team of Travel Specialists can guide you to their favorite off-the-beaten-path spots, too.

While ice caves are not impossible to explore on your own, they can be dangerous because they often change with the weather. Guided tours are available for most ice caves, with many guide services offering other adventurous activities suitable for more temperate interests. If you are honeymooning during whale season in April, you may enjoy a boat trip to search for the humpback whales, orcas and porpoises that frequent the area.

4. Romantic Waterfalls

Did you know that Iceland is called the “Land of Ice and Fire?” Ice covers 10% of the island, yet the country has Europe’s largest glaciers and active volcanoes. It comes as no surprise that each region in Iceland boasts a number of beautiful waterfalls perfect for a fairy-tale honeymoon.

From frozen glaciers to serene coastlines, Iceland’s South Coast in particular is famous for its waterfalls, the most iconic being Seljalandsfoss. Just 90 minutes from Reykjavik and close to the Ring Road, this 200-foot high waterfall flows from the Eyjafjallajökull Glacier. The biggest appeal is that you can walk behind it – be sure to bring a waterproof camera and clothing or take the chance of getting soaked!

Unforgettable Dinners in Reykjavik's best restaurants

5. Unforgettable Dinners in Reykjavik's best restaurants

Icelandic cuisine is incredibly fresh thanks to the local seafood and root vegetables. Like any modern city, Reykjavik is home to countless acclaimed restaurants that are incredibly authentic. Their menus feature traditional dishes like lobster soup, lamb stew and plokkfiskur, a popular fish stew.

If you are an adventurous eater, you will find opportunities to step outside your comfort zone while traveling through Iceland. Be sure to try the hákarl, otherwise known as fermented shark.
