Germany’s cuisine is influenced by its many regions and, of course, its history. Our Product Manager, Gaby Perlinger, compiled a list of 8 Dishes from Germany that you should try on your next trip!
SAUERBRATEN (POT ROAST)
It doesn’t get more traditional than this. Usually made with beef venison, or veal, the meat is marinated with vinegar and various spices. The tender stew is often served with red cabbage and potato dumplings for a real stick-to-your-ribs dining experience.
BRATWURST (GRILLED SAUSAGE)
A popular street food, and probably the most recognizable to Americans. The sausages are generally made of pork and veal, and seasoned with spices then grilled until the skin is nice and crispy and served with sauerkraut and mustard.
RINDERROULADE (BEEF ROLL)
Typically served in the Saxony region, this dish really packs multiple flavors into a neat roll. The thin beef slices are filled with bacon, pickles, and mustard and is then roasted with red wine and topped with delicious gravy. It pairs nicely with roasted winter vegetables.
KARTOFFELPUFFER (POTATO PANCAKE)
Similar to a latke, this fried potato pancake is usually served with eggs for breakfast (think German hashbrowns). It’s very common to top them with applesauce and sour cream.
SCHWEINSHAXE (HAM HOCK/PORK KNUCKLE)
The marinated pork knuckle is roasted at low temperatures until the skin is crispy and brittle but the meat is tender and juicy.
KARTOFFELKLOESSE (POTATO DUMPLINGS)
These quintessential dumplings are made with a mixture of cooked and raw potatoes and then boiled in salted water. It’s the perfect side dish for all of the German meats but can also be enjoyed as a standalone vegetarian dish.
SAUERKRAUT (FERMENTED CABBAGE)
This famous side dish consists of finely cut cabbage that is fermented and spiced with peppercorns and caraway seeds. It has garnered a lot of popularity lately due to its health benefits and nutritional value.
SPÄTZLE (EGG NOODLES)
A delicious vegetarian dish that is very popular in Germany, as well as Austria, Switzerland and Liechtenstein. It consists of only 4 ingredients, flour, eggs, salt and sparkling water then boiled until slightly cooked. They are served with melted cheese or fried with butter until crispy and golden.
