As most fans know, Game of Thrones is filmed all over the world, but Belfast in Northern Ireland is where the hit HBO series’ studio is located. The coast and countryside around Belfast double for key locations in the show, including coastal waters frequented by House Greyjoy, Melisande and Davros. What fans may not know is that Game of Thrones author, George R. R. Martin was inspired by a broad range of Celtic history and lore in creating the worlds of Westeros. And no country offers more mythical and historic Game of Thrones’ parallels than Wales. With more castles per square mile than any other country, Wales is the world’s castle capital and its national flag features a fiery red dragon. Tenon Tours’ eight day Thrones and Dragons tour takes you to both the real life filming locations of the show in Ireland and many historic places in Wales that inspired Martin and his literary muse, J.R.R. Tolkien, author of Lord of the Rings.

The Dark Hedges of Northern Ireland are a beautiful avenue of 18th century beech trees featured in Game of Thrones as Kingsroad. However in early 2016 a terrible storm that battered Northern Ireland destroyed many of the now famous trees. The people of Ireland decided to turn tragedy into beauty by salvaging the fallen wood and turning them into unique works of crafted wooden doors. Each door is designed to represent a different episode of the show by using key symbols and scenes. Together they tell the tale of Season 6. Take a look at a master at working making one of these magical doors below!
The doors will be on display throughout Northern Ireland situated near an iconic filming location.
